Sense of Freedom

One of my other passions, besides music, is backpacking all over Scotland, particularly the Western Isles.

In 2007, I went to the Isle of Barra for the first time.  I was walking along the most beautiful sandy beach at Tangasdale with the sun splitting the sky and I just felt amazing.  A few weeks later, I was back at work, gazing out the window at the munroes of the Trossachs, wishing I was anywhere but work.  I wrote the first verse that day, but the song then lay dorment for a few years.  In 2009, I went through my notes and found the lyrics I had started writing and decided it would be a good opportunity to try to finish it.

From the moans and groans
Of a dingy office floor
My mind it wanders
Yearns for so much more
Dreams of moors and sures
Of lands so wild and free
And oceans greater
Than we can ever be

(Chorus)
As I walk upon this land
Walk the silver, silver sand
I feel a sense of freedom
That others can only dream of

As the sun shines through
The dusty window pane
Like golden glitter
Never looking quite the same
I see the distant lands
Where my heart and soul the stand
In open acres
Wild an’ braw an’ grand

Where the tall trees stand
In a land of so much more
My heart keeps yearning
For an unlocked door
That I can wander through
To a country big and proud
With light and laughter
No sadness, rain or cloud

As I walk upon this land
Walk the silver, silver sand
I feel a sense of freedom
That others can only dream of
Oh, to hold it in my heart
Mother Nature’s loving art
I’ll feel that sense of freedom
That others can only dream of
