The Sweetie Song

Sweeties. Once a staple of every child’s daily life.  Now we’re becoming more aware of the affects they have on our health.  For some of us though, we just can’t help ourselves!

This lighthearted song was written after Barr’s reduced the amount of sugar in Irn Bru in response to the sugar tax that was being introduced.  There was a fair bit of backlash online and I did find some people’s reactions quite entertaining.

However, it’s mostly about my memories of rushing out to the ice cream van when I was a boy and how everything has become more expensive.

I remember those days when I was tiny
La la la la la
With my fifty pence piece I’d go out to the icy
La la la la la

Rhubarb and custards and jelly rings
La la la la la
A ten pence bag with more than ten sweet things
La la la la la

(Chorus)
Oh that’s the way it used to be
Oh that’s the way it used to be

Double dips with their swizzel sticks
La la la la la
I’d savour the flavour with every lick
La la la la la

I could buy lots of sweeties with my pocket money
La la la la la
Now they’ve hiked up the prices I can’t buy as many
La la la la la

They took the E numbers from our snacks
Years before the sugar tax
They took the E numbers from our snacks
Years before the sugar tax

Now I’m much older, I still like a munch
La la la la la
But the snacks aren’t as good they don’t have as much crunch
La la la la la

They tell us these sweet things are bad for you
And I know they are
But now that they’ve claimed our Irn Bru
They’ve taken things too far
